Monday 12th May 2025

Event Report

“An excellent study day; thank you to REDiC for bringing together such a passionate, like-minded group.”

On Monday 12th May, a Manchester basked in sunshine, played host to delegates attending our REDiC Incubator “Cultivating Academic Research and Empowerment (C.A.R.E)” workshop.  The glorious blue skies certainly highlighted the panoramic views from the 18th floor of the Hyatt Regency conference room and set the scene for a relaxed and inspiring day of learning and networking.

Prof. Bhuvaneswari Krishnamoorthy based at University of Salford, Manchester Foundation Trust and REDiC Steering Group member and event organiser, began by welcoming participants and outlining the aim for the workshop; to empower ethnic minority health and care professionals and early-career researchers by providing the tools, insights, and support needed to pursue a career in clinical and applied research. Prof. Yemisi Takwoingi, REDiC Lead, gave an overview of the REDiC Incubator and its work in creating an inclusive community to share knowledge and experiences with a view to building research capacity. As well as REDiC’s aim to raise awareness of opportunities, inspiring those new to research and working with funders to change policy.

We were delighted to welcome Mrs. Humaira Abbas, Senior Programme Manager at the NIHR Academy to join us to give an overview of the NIHR Academy and its current awards and programmes. Along with top tips on submitting applications Humaira delivered a valuable insight to the work of the NIHR Academy and how it can support individuals. Continuing the theme of application strategies, Prof. Rachel Cowen, University of Manchester delivered a presentation focussed on writing successful grant applications. This included how to navigate the common challenges and provided examples of success stories.

“The conference was exceptionally organized and addressed all of my questions thoroughly. It was truly impressive and incredibly helpful.”

Following valuable networking time in the morning coffee break, delegates heard from six inspiring speakers who talked about their personal journeys that led them to where they are today. Prof. Takwoingi, Prof. Krishnamoorthy, Dr Gita Ramdharry, Dr. Omolade Allen, Dr. Fozia Ahmed & Dr. Huda Badri shared the choices they have made and challenges they have faced and how they overcame them, offering delegates relatable real-life examples, highlighting that there is often no straightforward path into research. It was a really engaging session which generated lots of interest and questions from the audience. The final morning session was led by Prof. Heather Iles-Smith, who offered her expertise, suggesting practical guidance and best practice around the importance of coaching and mentorship.

The presenters and their lived experience…was extremely relatable

The afternoon sessions were tailored to the needs of attendees, offering ample opportunities for engagement. During the interactive ‘Meet the Expert’ speed dating session, delegates rotated between specialists, which gave them the opportunity to receive personalised advice on fellowship applications, research interests, and career development.

This was followed by a practical workshop focused on advancing careers in clinical and applied health research, with particular attention to overcoming common barriers. Participants also received guidance on navigating both academic and clinical environments to support their professional growth.

“Thank you for providing a valuable information about getting a head start into R&D”

The day was a resounding success with delegates commenting that “it was really uplifting” to make connections with others facing the same challenges and that it was “eye-opening for those who were not aware that the NIHR offers a route for us to pursue fellowships and clinical research.

“It would be valuable to organise more events like this, especially for ethnic minority staff, as many are unaware of these excellent opportunities.”

“Absolutely amazing event! Enjoyed every minute of it.”

“The event was outstanding, and the landscape was stunning, contributing to a serene and pleasurable experience.”
