At the recent NIHR Student Conference “Is a Career in Research for me?”, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the NIHR-Supported Race Equity and Diversity in Careers (REDiC) Incubator to promote the EMPOWEReD project (Empowering Medical Professionals through Peer-led, Work-based Education for Real-world Development).
Engaging with students and graduates at the event provided a valuable platform to explore how inclusive, sustainable education can bridge learning gaps and support career development in healthcare.
A key takeaway from the conference was the vital role of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research and education. Attending the PPI in Research workshop reinforced how integrating patient perspectives enhances both academic projects and clinical practice, making education and healthcare delivery more impactful.
Overall, the conference served as a powerful reminder of the importance of mentorship, diversity, and interdisciplinary learning in shaping the future of medical education and professional development.

Report by Alicia De Vidal
BWAMS Committee
What is a Research Rodeo? A Research Rodeo is a conference connecting healthcare students with researchers and medical professionals from various specialties, offering networking opportunities and avenues for research involvement, such as audits and systematic reviews.
On Saturday 25th January, Birmingham Widening Access to Medical Sciences (BWAMS) society hosted such an event at the University of Birmingham Medical School. With support from NIHR’s Incubator in Race Equality and Diversity in Careers (REDiC), healthcare students were educated on entering research and the potential challenges they may encounter.
The day included oral presentation competitions, poster displays of student research, and workshops introducing research methodologies and essential skills, such as creating a research question and statistics.
The event was a resounding success and could not have been achieved without the support from REDiC (Prof Yemisi Takwoingi and Tamara Freeman) and the BWAMS committee (Sam Sherratt-Mayhew, Andeep Ghataure, Alicia De Vidal, and Zahirah Shahnawaz).
Professor Mahendra Patel named in HSJ’s Top 50 Most Influential Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic People in Health 2024
Congratulations to Professor Mahendra Patel, REDiC Co-Lead, who has been named amongst the top 50 most influential Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people in health for 2024; here’s what they had to say:
“Mahendra Patel is a pioneering pharmacist dedicated to reducing health inequalities and addressing research disparities in ethnic minority and underserved communities, driving improvements in population health.
He is the founding director of the Centre for Research Equity at the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, a culmination of his leadership in the PRINCIPLE and PANORAMIC COVID-19 treatment trials, to drive forward inclusive research across the UK.
Professor Patel has held national leadership roles, including as an elected board member and treasurer for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. At NICE, he founded the NICE Student Champions initiative, which became a national programme across more than 40 university healthcare faculties.
His efforts to advance health equity led to the ministerial launch of a landmark collaboration between the Centre for Research Equity and the Health and Social Care Research and Development Division in Northern Ireland, with support from the Department of Health Northern Ireland and key agencies.
This partnership marked a significant step toward improving health outcomes, reducing disparities, and ensuring that research benefits reach all communities.”
Professor Patel was extremely delighted to find out he had been recognised, acknowledging that this:
“… is a testament to the progress we are all making and working together in raising the profile across the wider healthcare landscape.”
You can view the full top 50 list on the HSJ website.
Parliamentary Multidisciplinary and Multiprofessional Healthcare Forum: Shaping the Future of the NHS
Professor Patel, through the Centre for Research Equity at University of Oxford, led a House of Commons Parliamentary event with 90 healthcare professional leaders from across the UK in attendance. We were especially pleased to see Professor Yemisi Takwoingi, co-lead of the NIHR REDiC Incubator, speaking on the panel and sharing her invaluable experience from her own postdoctoral journey. Dr. Valencia Kabeya, an NIHR Postdoctoral Research Fellow and member of the REDiC Incubator, worked alongside fellow committee members, bringing dedication, expertise, and passion to make this event a remarkable success.
Write to Rise: A REDiC retreat for transformative fellowship and grant writing report
9 – 11 February 2026, Nailcote Hall Hotel, Warwickshire
We were excited to be able to offer twenty, early and mid-career researchers, from under-represented backgrounds, a unique opportunity to spend three days focussed on developing their impactful writing skills. The retreat blended expert workshops and writing time with mentoring and peer support along with insights from NIHR panel members and previous successful applicants. Day one introduced participants to the support available through the NIHR Research Support Service and importance of research inclusion. This was complimented by insights from NIHR panel members in an interactive discussion session into what makes a strong application. On day two, we were delighted to welcome Esther Selsdon, Consultant Fellow from the Royal Literary Fund who delivered a fantastic series of thoughtful workshops on impactful and expressive writing, followed by tips on getting started and writing in plain English. Day three focussed on challenges, problem solving and success strategies. The faculty were joined by Prof G.J. Melendez-Torres, Associate Dean (Researcher Inclusion) NIHR Academy who facilitated a discussion around these topics and delegates were able to ask questions to successful applicants in another interactive panel session.

Each of the retreat participants was allocated one of the faculty present to be their mentor for the duration of the retreat, along with opportunity for pre and post retreat support. There was plenty of opportunity throughout the three days for participants to make the most of this support with hands-on supervision time.

Building the Future of Health and Care Research!
Race, Equity & Diversity in Careers
Formed in January 2024, the Race Equity and Diversity in Careers (REDiC) Incubator was developed to build research capacity and support the development of research careers for racially minoritised health and care professionals. The Incubator’s work is driven by the themes of the NIHR Research Inclusion Strategy. This includes the ambition to increase the diversity of NIHR researchers, award holders and panel members.
REDiC Launch: ‘Health & Care Researcher Inclusion: Meet the Funders’ Event Report
The NIHR supported ‘Race Equity & Diversity in Careers’ (REDiC) Incubator held their virtual launch event ‘Health & Care Researcher Inclusion: Meet the Funders’, on Wednesday 11th September 2024. It was a great success with over 100 participants attending the 2-hour webinar.
Our lead Prof. Yemisi Takwoingi introduced the Incubator to the audience outlining our aim, Incubator structure and activity to date. This was followed by Humaira Abbas and Henry Mbawa who shared details of NIHR capacity building initiatives and current opportunities, supported through the NIHR Academy.
Our breakout discussion sessions gave participants the opportunity to share their positive experiences of overcoming barriers to research and reasons for success. A recurrent theme which came through the discussions was the support participants had received from mentors and allies and how much of a positive impact this made to them. Peer contact and support was also discussed as being vital for reducing isolation, sharing of resources and providing a source of personal validation. Access to case studies of researchers from an ethnic minority background was discussed and it was felt that the promotion of the ‘lived experience’ would encourage and motivate those from similar backgrounds to apply for research funding and awards.
Suggestions for activity from funders to complement ongoing positive efforts to address researcher inclusion especially of racially minoritised staff were discussed alongside how the REDiC Incubator can support individuals and organisations.
Finally, we heard from funders NIHR, Medical Research Council’s ‘Black in Biomedical Research’ Advisory Group’ (MRC-BBRAG) and Wellcome to understand how they are supporting researcher inclusion, followed by the opportunity for Q&A.
The talks can be viewed on our REDiC YouTube channel.
REDiC is continuing to work closely with funders to explore how suggestions from the event can be actioned to facilitate researcher inclusion.
Details of upcoming REDiC events will be circulated early 2025.

The EMPOWEReD initiative: Shaping Tomorrow’s Doctors
There is a growing recognition that medical education must go beyond knowledge delivery to prepare students for clinical practice adequately. The EMPOWEReD initiative—Empowering Medical Professionals through Peer-led, Online, Work-based Education for Real-world Development, equips students with the skills in leadership, teamwork and communication they need to transition confidently into practice.
At the heart of EMPOWEReD are two innovative programmes:
SIMBA (Simulation via Instant Messaging for Bedside Application): This programme allows students to collaborate in creating realistic clinical cases for simulation-based teaching.
CoMICs (Concise Medical Information Cines): CoMICs focuses on developing short, accessible educational videos that simplify complex medical topics.

NIHR Academy News: Changes to career development opportunities
Since 2018, the NIHR Academy has been working to break down barriers to career progression in research. But our portfolio of opportunities has grown over the years and become complex.
What’s changing?
To ensure our career development opportunities are accessible, we are simplifying our fellowship offering to a single award at predoctoral, doctoral and postdoctoral levels.
By simplifying our awards, but keeping our background-specific funding committees, we will improve the experience for applicants but maintain the level of funding and background-specific support that is currently available.
Timelines
The first simplified award to launch will be the Predoctoral Award in January 2025. Doctoral and Postdoctoral awards will run twice a year.

Write to Rise
Write to Rise
Building the Future of Health and Care Research!
Our 'Write to Rise' retreat has now taken place. Thank you to all who participated and supported the event. A report on the event is below:
Write to Rise: A REDiC retreat for transformative fellowship and grant writing report
9 - 11 February 2026, Nailcote Hall Hotel, Warwickshire
We were excited to be able to offer twenty, early and mid-career researchers, from under-represented backgrounds, a unique opportunity to spend three days focussed on developing their impactful writing skills. The retreat blended expert workshops and writing time with mentoring and peer support along with insights from NIHR panel members and previous successful applicants.
“The retreat was highly valuable in creating protected, structured time to think strategically about my NIHR application. In particular, the emphasis on understanding panel expectations shifted my focus from simply refining content to strengthening positioning and impact. The balance between independent work and expert insight was especially beneficial.”

Day One & Two
Day one introduced participants to the support available through the NIHR Research Support Service and the importance of research inclusion. This was complemented by insights from NIHR panel members in an interactive discussion session on what makes a strong application.
On day two, we were delighted to welcome Esther Selsdon, Consultant Fellow from the Royal Literary Fund, who delivered a fantastic series of thoughtful workshops on impactful and expressive writing, followed by tips on getting started and writing in plain English.
Esther reflected that “the enthusiasm and generosity of the participants” made the retreat so successful.“It’s such a delight to run writing workshops when everyone has something constructive to offer.“
Day Three
Day three focused on challenges, problem-solving and success strategies. The faculty were joined by Prof G.J. Melendez-Torres, Associate Dean (Researcher Inclusion) NIHR Academy who facilitated a discussion around these topics and delegates were able to ask questions to successful applicants in another interactive panel session.
“The retreat has encouraged me to approach writing more strategically. I will focus earlier on funder expectations and assessment criteria, seek timely mentor feedback, and shape the proposal around impact and feasibility before extensive drafting. This ensures effort is aligned with competitiveness rather than just productivity.”

Each of the retreat participants was allocated one of the faculty present to be their mentor for the duration of the retreat, along with an opportunity for pre and post retreat support. There was plenty of opportunity throughout the three days for participants to make the most of this support with hands-on supervision time.
“I had a very positive experience at the retreat and I can confidently say that it has enhanced my chances of securing funding in the future. Having events directed at researchers from under-represented backgrounds is so essential … It was wonderful being surrounded by so many people who are going through similar experiences and to see faculty from ethnic minority backgrounds who have made it in the system!”
One of the aims of the retreat was to create a community between attendees that would grow post retreat and to help facilitate this, peer reflection sessions where delegates could share progress and critique their work together were included in the programme.
“I feel I gained a lot of exposure in terms of networking. This retreat allowed me to meet and hear from different researchers at different levels and encouraged me to continue my own career.”
The event was hugely successful with both participants and faculty expressing their delight at having been involved.
“Thank you for the opportunity to attend, it was an extremely valuable experience, especially in terms of career trajectory and development. It was a VERY supportive experience!!”
“This was an amazing opportunity, and I am beyond grateful to have been a part of it. I know this will play a part in my journey as a researcher, and this is so beneficial to minority groups in research. I hope this continues for many others.”
“Connecting with other researchers from ethnic minority backgrounds who are going through similar experiences: the sense of community and the want to help each other were very apparent throughout the retreat.”
