Dr Gita Ramdharry isinvolved with REDiC as an NHS employed Clinical Academic Physiotherapist, and a research lead for Allied Health Professionals. I aim to bring these perspectives to the work of the incubator.

Dr Gita Ramdharry is a Consultant Allied Health Professional in Neuromuscular Diseases at the Queen Square/ MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases, National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH. She is an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL. She became an NIHR Advanced Clinical Academic & Practitioner Fellow in 2025.

She has worked as a physiotherapist since 1995 and developed a special interest in neurology early on. She was a clinical physiotherapist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from 2001 and moved into research at the UCL Institute of Neurology in 2004. She completed a PhD at UCL in 2008 looking at walking patterns, endurance and orthotic interventions for people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

Following her PhD, Gita worked for nearly 11 years at the Faculty for Health Social Care and Education at Kingston University/St George’s University of London. While there, she was awarded an NIHR Clinical Lectureship in 2010 for further research into Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease as a part-time honorary research fellow at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH. She progressed to an Associate Professor and became the Director of Research for the School of Allied Health, Midwifery and Social Care from 2016 to 2018.

Gita is a research supervisor to MRes, MSc, and PhD students, plus HEE/NIHR ICA Clinical Doctoral Fellows. She teaches and supervised researchprojects for Master’s programmes at UCL. Other roles include: professional advisor to the CMTUK patient support group and Muscular Dystrophy UK; member of the Neuromuscular Physiotherapist Network; former associate editor for the journal ‘Physiotherapy’; Deputy Chair for the NIHR ICA Doctoral Clinical Academic Practitioner Fellowship panel; grant panel member for Ataxia UK, Muscular Dystrophy UK, Myositis UK. She is co-editor on two Elsevier book titles: “Physical Management of Neurological Conditions” (4th and 5th editions) and “Pocketbook of Neurological Physiotherapy” (2nd edition).

She also works in the area of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and is the Chair of the EDI committee for the Department of Neuromuscular Diseases at UCL Institute of Neurology and a lead for the Disability Awareness group at IoN. She is part of the Diversity Committee for the international Inherited Neuropathy consortium and is also leading work to develop recruitment strategies to increase diversity in participant recruitment in the Department of Neuromuscular Diseases, UCL.
